The National Education Gaming Championship (NEGC), is back at Campus Game Fest 2016 on its 6th year, with the Organising Committee of Campus Game Fest (CGF) comprising the Institute of Technical Education (ITE), People’s Association Youth Movement (PAYM) and the Singapore’s Cybersports & Online Gaming Association (SCOGA). NEGC is an inter-school gaming competition organised by Nexus, Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) and supported by the Ministry of Education.
This year, the total number of teams participating in NEGC has increased from 60 to 80 teams, breaking down into 64 Secondary School teams and 16 Post-Secondary Education Institute (PSEI) teams, due to the overwhelming respond in registration. These teams will be competing for the top prize of $1,500 for each category (Secondary and PSEI categories) and the coveted NEGC trophy. Second and Third Prizes are $750 and $250 respectively. Teams will compete using a PC virtual simulation training software, known as the Virtual Battlespace 2 (VBS2). VBS2 has been used by the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) for training, which has been modified into a first person shooter (FPS) role playing game (RPG) for NEGC.
Snapshot of Virtual Battlespace 2
Students will have to go through a half-day intensive training program leading up to the tournament. Aside from picking up skills like teamwork, strategizing & leadership, it will also allow the youth a glimpse of being an SAF soldier and increase their awareness of the capabilities of the 3rd Generation SAF. Players will be deployed in combat in a mixed environment of urban and jungle, whereby the virtual character will be wearing either a green or grey uniform depending on whether they are on the offence or defence. A particularly interesting experience is to be able to use the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for surveillance and to control the TALON, a small military robot, during the virtual battle. These are some of the features that are uncommon in mainstream FPS games.
The tournament will take place at CGF from 24th to 26th of June 2016 at ITE College Central. Participants can look forward to the exciting qualifiers and preliminaries culminating in the finale over the three days. Visitors and spectators can come down to support the competing teams!
